‘IMPRINT’

Studies show that every year, 100-140 thousand tons of micro plastic, originating from car tires, pile up in our environment. These particles can now already be found inside animals and also humans and are very harmful to the body and the environment. Mirco plastic deriving from car tires is the number one source of micro plastic, with far distance to the second biggest source.

When I went on a roadtrip in April, to get a friends car from Berlin to Mallorca, I couldn’t help but recognize not only pieces of but whole car tires laying around in the most random places, being overgrown and almost act as part of nature. They were the perfect analogy as to how humans are leaving their traces on the environment and how industrial and ecological will adapt but never combine. Just like the imprint humans are leaving on nature I used car tyre imprints to delevop the print designs. Through colourways and organic shapes I focused on combing the industrial with the natural.

EXTENSIVE INNOVATIVE TEXTILE RESEARCH

Diving deeper into car tyre recycling lead me to experiment with tires themselves and similar/associated materials, in order to figure out new ways of recycling those. In the process I struggled with the durability of the material, causing me to work mainly with bicycle tires. I focused on combing the industrial with the natural, just like the car tires I found laying around in the most random spots in nature, whilst also incorporating associations of map-, intersection- and bridge-like structures. My challenge was to find ways to combine materials that don’t usually hold together and make those that are industrial more organic.
